DELIVERY OF FIRST BOEING 727  (N4610)
(ORIGINAL – ISSUED: (02JUN2014)
HISTORICAL - From what I have been able to garner from various individuals, the scenario on transition from Props, to Prop Jets, to all Jets is as follows:
1. National became the first airline to operated jets domestically in 1958 by leasing two aircraft from Pan Am to operate MIA-NYC flights during the winter season before taking delivery of its own DC-8s in 1959.
2. In OCT of 1964 - and marking our 30th Anniversary, while continuing to operate Electra's, we retired the last of our piston-engine aircraft and, therefore, became the first all jet-powered domestic trunk airline by taking delivery on 23 October of four of the new sleek Boeing 727s.

3. From the 1965 Annual Report: Our present fleet consists of seven B727's, seventeen Lockheed Electra II's, and thirteen Douglas DC-8's; a total of thirty-seven modern, jet-powered equipment.
4. By the spring/summer/fall of 1968 the last Electra (apparently a favorite of the cockpit crews) was retired from the NAL fleet - and, therefore, we were flying all pure jets from that point on utilizing Boeing 727s and DC-8s. I have been provided various dates of retirement for the Electra's: April 21st, August, summer of 68, & end of '68!
